My students just love learning about the weather because it’s something they can see, and it affects them, so they always show an interest in my experience. So why not drive instruction based on their interests? A news and weather station dramatic play is just what you need to try! It lends itself so easily to developing social skills, fine motor skills, communication, literacy, math, social studies, maps, and science skills.
You can find the News & Weather Station Dramatic Play Unit here. It has real classroom photos and all the information you need to make this a success! While you are planning, check out the Weather Math & Literacy Centers, All About Weather Science, and the Spring Directed Drawing Unit.

News & weather Station Dramatic Play Ideas

News Desk! The news desk is the main area in this setup. I pushed my table and checkout stand together to form the desk, covered the front with butcher paper, and added the printable news station sign. Print the computer screen, tape it to the desk, and add a keyboard. Easy peasy! Then I put all the other news segment props behind the news desk. For the background, I used red, black, and blue butcher paper to create a striped background. There is a shelf to the side that has more weather items and the meteorologist station, and then more reporters’ supplies on the other side.

Reporters’ Supplies! On the shelf, I placed all the supplies that the reporters may need for their different news segments. There are dress-up clothes for the special guests, stuffed animals for the adopt a pet section, weather accessories, a birthday cake for the birthday segment, globes, safety props like sunscreen, a bike helmet, a fire routine, a telephone, a microphone, clip microphones, cell phones, a computer, health props, and the news reports on clip boards. Just gather accessories that go with the news segments you pick out. If this is too much, take items out to fit your class needs.

Clip Microphones! Paint a clothespin black and hot glue a pom pom to the end of it to make a clip microphone for their clothes. Also, add regular microphones for reporters to use! I like to add in a regular office phone so students can push the numbers and take calls from the public about breaking news.

News Camera! I love DIY prop ideas, and this news camera is so simple and fun! Paint a shoe box black. The handle is a reading phone that has been painted black and hot-glued to the top. Then, cut the bottom off a silver cup and hot glue the top portion to the front of the box for the lens. The microphone is a pom pom glued to a black marker lid and glued to the box. Then, add buttons (random lids) to the other side for the camera person. To make the screen stick out, add some cardboard behind the screen printable.
Camera Base: I used a phone stand for the camera base. I taped a paper plate to the stand, so the students had an area to place the camera on the stand.

Camera Signs! Glue the camera on/off signs back-to-back. Then, laminate the signs and use a hole punch to put a hole in the top. Place the signs on a book ring so students can change it during play. One side is live on air, and the other is off air.

News Segments! The news segments are a fun way to sneak in health, safety, social studies, and science into their pretend play! Students can create pretend news reports for the various segments, which increases oral language, vocabulary, and storytelling. Start with A FEW segment options, add more segments slowly (after a few days or the second week) so the students are not overwhelmed. Pick the segments YOU WANT, you don’t have to use all of them in your weather station dramatic play center.
- Break News- Students can report on exciting things that are happening in the classroom. Maybe they visit the block center to see the massive tower that someone built.
- Weather- The meteorologist can report on the forecast and advise people on what to wear for the upcoming weather.
- Traffic- Reporters can share the traffic report to give people a heads up on what is happening on the roads.
- Sports- Students can share about their own sporting events or things happening at the school.
Print the different news segments you want at your news station. Then, slide them in a plastic sheet protector and place them in a binder. Open and invert the binder so that it stands up on itself. Students can flip the pages to get to the news segment they want to report on.

Weather Forecast! Use a magnetic board or oil drip tray (Pictured. I found mine in the auto area of Walmart.) for the forecast map and weather icons. Students will place the weather icon pieces on the map during the weather report and create pretend weather scenarios for various parts of the country. Students can use the weather maps and weather forecast displays to develop their imaginative play and problem-solving skills.

Weather Report! There are 5 different weather report options for students to complete and report on. These are great for embedding literacy, handwriting, and science into their play. Students can make up a weather report or share what is happening in their area. These weather reports are great for adding literacy and writing to your weather station dramatic play.

Weekly Forecast! Print, cut, laminate, and tape together the days pieces to create the weekly forecast calendar. Place a large piece of Velcro on each day, then a small piece on the back of the weather chart pieces. Students can create the weekly weather forecast by placing the weather chart pieces on each day of the week and explaining the weather pattern during the weather report in the weather station dramatic play.

National Forecast! To make the weather symbols, print, laminate, and cut out the weather icons. Then place magnets on the back of the icons. I sorted mine in a wooden tray that the Melissa and Doug cars came in. Students can place the weather icons on the map to show the weather forecast at the weather station dramatic play.

Today’s Temperature! Print and laminate the temperature charts. Place a hundred chart next to it for students to use for support when writing the numbers on the chart. Don’t forget to add a real thermometer for students to use during play! Students can use dry-erase markers to record and track the high and low temperatures daily during the weather report in the weather station dramatic play area!

Weather What to Wear! Provide students with a variety of clothing props so they can dress for the weather that is being reported. Students will be sorting and categorizing the weather props and clothing by type and season as they report the weather. Students can report what the weather is on the forecast, then show what clothing is appropriate to wear for the weather forecasted.
- Accessories: winter cap, summer hat, mittens, gloves, scarf, umbrella, sunglasses
- Coats: raincoat, light jacket, winter coat
- Tops: short-sleeved shirt/tank top, long-sleeved shirt, dress, sweater
- Bottoms: shorts, snow pants, pants, skirt
- Shoes: sandals, tennis shoes, snow boots, rain boots
If you don’t have extra prop clothing, ask families if they have any extras they can donate or let the class use for this unit. You can also check thrift stores for weather-related clothing props. I opened up my fridge and used it for shelves to hold some of the clothing props for the news and weather station dramatic play center.
A printable stick person is included to dress, with tons of options, so students can start thinking about and making clothing choices based on the weather. I put mine on a cookie sheet and added little magnets to the back of each clothing article after I laminated them.

Severe Weather! Little meteorologists can increase their knowledge about severe weather while they play, too! Print and cut out the severe weather cards. Then, place Velcro dots on the back and one on the chart. Students can place the severe weather on the chart to report to their audience. Students can then review tornado or earthquake drills based on the severe weather that is going to occur. The severe weather chart pieces are real photos, and the weekly weather forecast icons are clip art to help students differentiate between what is severe weather and what is typical weather.
Emergency Drills! Print and laminate the emergency drill posters and have them by the severe weather chart. Students can discuss and practice the appropriate emergency drill for the type of severe weather. If you have students who are scared of severe weather, this may be a way to make them more comfortable while they play in the news & weather station dramatic play area.

Weather Measure! Set out science beakers or a rain gauge with blue pom poms. Students can fill the cylinders and measure how much rain is in the container using a bean ruler. Set out a variety of sizes of white pom poms, and students can measure and compare the hail balls with a bean ruler during the weather report. Learn how to make a bean ruler here! This is a fun way to add math and science to your news and weather station dramatic play area!

Traffic Report! Print and laminate the map pieces. Tape the pieces together to make a large traffic map. Place the map on a magnetic board. Print, cut, and laminate the traffic report pieces, then put a magnet on the back of the pieces. I put the magnet board over the front of the play kitchen in the dramatic play area, or you can turn it around and do the traffic report on the back. Students can place the pieces on the map as they give their traffic reports. Place the extra pieces next to the map and add a pointer stick for students to use. During play, students can create a story/report and relate the traffic condition to the weather or an event. Ex: Due to all the rain, the roads are flooded, or due to the cold temperatures, the roads are icy.

More News Segments! There are so many news segment options included in the unit. You can pick the ones that your students would like best. Here are some prop ideas for each segment that is included in the printable news and weather station dramatic play unit.
- World News- add a globe, maps, and/or cultural objects
- Local News- add props that relate to your local community, like store or restaurant logos
- School News- add things like school mascot, daily schedule, favorite books, and/or school yearbook
- Music & Entertainment– add musical instruments, concert flyers, and/or music magazines for students to use during the segment.
- Special Guest- add community helper clothing, hats, and/or props for students to pretend to be various people as visitors on the news.
- Pet of the Day: add stuffed animal pets for students to use during the segment. Students will be learning about how to care for an animal and the kinds of animals.
- Celebrations: add birthday cake, streamers, or holiday-themed decorations. This is a great way to incorporate culture and community into your play.

Health & Safety! There is a health & safety tips news segment, and I thought this was a great way to encourage students to think and talk about making healthy choices. The best way to learn something is to teach and share what you know. They can talk about brushing teeth, hygiene routines, bike safety, sports safety, sun safety, and more! Add sunscreen, a handwashing routine visual and props, body hygiene props, toothbrush/toothpaste props, dental health props, and doctor props, as well as the included flip books.

Special Guest! Students can pretend to be special guests and be interviewed by the reporter on the news. Students can put on the community helper hats or clothing to show who they are. The reporter can place the community helper they are interviewing on the chart to begin the segment, then ask them questions about their job. To make the special guest chart, laminate and place Velcro on the board. Laminate, cut, and place a small piece of Velcro on the back of each community helper. Pick the community helper pieces you want to use. You do NOT have to use all of the pieces. This is a fun addition to change the weather station dramatic play to re-engage students in the second or third week.

News Report! Included are five news report options. Pick the one that best fits and is most appropriate for your students. Students can write and draw the news reports during play! Remember, scribbles and pictures are still developing writing skills. A kindergarten classroom can use the more in-depth report, while preschool uses the simple ones; such an easy way to differentiate.
You have to try a news and weather station dramatic play in your classroom this year! It is such a fun theme for young children. I like to do my weather theme unit in the spring, but it could be planned anytime throughout the school year. This fun weather station could also go with your community helpers theme. I love that this news and weather station dramatic play printables have so many easy ways to differentiate learning, making it versatile for several age groups.
