Turkey Letter Sort and Color Sort

Turkey letter sort and color sort is a fun, hands-on activity!  It will get kids up, moving, and talking about letters, sounds, and colors.  It’s easy to set up and clean up, too.  We used this activity for an arrival table time activity, and they LOVED it.

Turkey Letter Sort & Color Sort

Grab a large piece of butcher paper or poster board and draw a large turkey.  I used India Ink in a bingo dauber to create this cute turkey, but you could also use paint or a marker to make the turkey outline.  Write a color word on each feather using the matching color marker.

Next, grab some color counters like these stackable color counters and some letter magnets.  Any letter magnets or letter manipulatives will work.

Then let the students go for it!  Instruct them to sort the counters and letters by color.

I have a multi-age classroom with three, four, and five-year-olds so this activity was super easy to differentiate.  My three and four-year-olds sorted the color counters, and my pre-k students sorted the letters.  Students pick a letter, say the letter name and/or sound, and sort it by color.  If they were sorting the counters, they had to say the color of the counter and sort it by color.

This is one example of a hands-on letter game that I use to teach letters without using letters of the week!  Students were talking with each other about letters and sounds in a meaningful way!  This turkey letter sort was so much fun.  In keeping with the turkey/Thanksgiving theme, I am planning to create a turkey number sort next!
